Wendy
Schadewald
is a longtime editor and film critic who lives in Burnsville, Minnesota, with her cat Pumpkin and has been writing her Short Redhead Reel Reviews column since 1986. Currently, her capsule film reviews are published weekly in seven editions of the Southwest newspapers, as well as on their website (www.letsgosouthwest.com), and in the monthly editions of The Scoop and the Uptown Neighborhood News; her reviews also appear intermittently in three editions of the Thisweek newspapers. The film reviews have also appeared in the weekly editions of the Anoka County Shopper and the Star News and in the monthly Cinestar and Twin City Times magazines.. She has also been a guest critic on KARE-11’s weekly SHOWCASE MINNESOTA show and on WCCO radio to discuss films.
Her film reviews first appeared on the Internet in 1995 when she was asked to write for MN Online, which was devoted to providing information about Minnesota and was cofounded by KTCA, Minnesota Public Radio (MPR), and MRNet (a local telecommunications provider). The staff of MN Online asked Wendy to be the Minnesota film critic for their site and to provide short, easily accessible, easy-to-read film recommendations. MN Online thought that her format/site was both unique from those of other film reviewers and that their audience wanted an alternative to the lengthy, time-consuming reviews currently being published in other venues.
She reviews more than 500 films annually, including mainstream and foreign-made films, and has been a movie buff for as long as she can remember—perhaps it is genetic. When visiting relatives in Wales, she even learned that her grandmother always got the washing done early on Fridays, so that she could see the movie at the local cinema.
