Nine vignettes intertwine as a well-behaved Mexican inmate, Sandra (Elpidia Carrillo), serving time in a Los Angeles county jail goes ballistic when her monthly visitation with her daughter does not go as expected; a pregnant woman, Diana (Robin Wright Penn), gets upset when she runs into an old flame (Jason Isaacs) at a neighborhood supermarket that triggers buried feelings; a despondent nurse, Holly (Lisa Gay Hamilton), shows up at her sister's house to confront their adulterous stepfather about horrific childhood traumas; a woman, Sonia (Holly Hunter), and her husband (Stephen Dillane) fight over having children while visiting another couple to celebrate their new home; a daughter, Samantha (Amanda Seyfreid), is encouraged by her mother to spread her wings despite her role as a mediator with her gravely ill dad (Ian McShane); a woman, Lorna (Amy Brenneman), attends a funeral and learns that her deaf ex-husband (William Fritchner) still has feelings for her; a phone call to her daughter changes an amorous outing at motel for a housewife, Ruth (Sissy Spacek), and her intended lover (Aidan Quinn); a breast cancer patient, Camille (Kathy Baker), discusses her fears with her husband (Joe Mantegna) before undergoing a mastectomy; and a grieving mother, Maggie (Glenn Close), has a peaceful picnic at a cemetery with her grape-loving daughter (Dakota Fanning).
