Ace in the Hole

When a booze-loving, limelight-seeking journalist (Kirk Douglas) and his naïve cameraman (Robert Arthur) working for a small-time Albuquerque newspaper learn from an unhappily married woman (Jan Sterling) that her husband (Richard Benedict) is trapped in a Pueblo mine while excavating Indian artifacts in this tension-filled, captivating 1951 black-and-white Billy Wilder film, the two-bit newsman creates a media circus and spectator frenzy by manipulating the corrupt sheriff (Gene Evans) and a well-intentioned rescue engineer (Frank Jaquet) and by delaying the rescue operations for his own selfish gain.
