Nightcrawler A riveting, gritting, intense, well-acted, 117-minute thriller in which an ambitious, creepy, smart, sadistic, slick-talking opportunist (Jake Gyllenhaal) takes up a camera to be a freelance photographer and hires a desperate assistant (Riz Ahmed) to beat a rival veteran competitor (Bill Paxton) in filming breaking news of car crashes, fires, and crimes such as robberies and murders on the dark streets of Los Angeles and selling the graphic footage to a second-tier news director (Rene Russo).
