Inherent Vice

Exceedingly bizarre, memorable characters (Eric Roberts, Reese Witherspoon, Martin Short, Owen Wilson, Martin Sheen, Cuba Gooding Jr., Maya Rudolph, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Jena Malone) and sporadic muffled dialogue dominate this wacky, incoherent, uneven, love-it-or-hate-it, 148-minute, Paul Thomas Anderson's neo-noir, satirical, dark, stoner comedy adapted from Thomas Pynchon's 2009 novel in which an oddball, grass-toting detective (Joaquin Phoenix) must deal with an egotistical, banana-loving detective (Josh Brolin) as he searches for his missing former girlfriend (Katherine Waterson) in 1970s Los Angeles.
