Hunger Games, The: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes

[Opens Nov. 17 in theaters.] Wonderful special effects and sets dominate Francis Lawrence's complex, action-packed, love-it-or-hate-it, gritty, well-paced, violent, star-studded (Fionnula Flanagan, Jason Schwartzman, Burn Gorman, Hunter Schafer, Josh Andrés Rivera, Max Raphael, Zoe Renée, Isobel Jesper Jones, Dakota Shapiro, Konstantin Taffet, Honor Gillies, and Vaughan Reilly), 165-minute prequel based on Suzanne Collins' 2020 novel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes that sets the stage in which ambitious, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), eventually becomes the tyrannical President of Panem and mentors a beautiful singer (Rachel Zegler) who is forced to compete against other tributes (Nick Benson, Mackenzie Lansing, Cooper Dillon, Kjell Brutscheidt, Hiroki Berrecloth, et al.) from various districts in the Hunger Games orchestrated by its creator (Peter Dinklage) and ruthless, snake-loving gamemaker (Viola Davis).
