Out of Plain Sight [Feb. 20 opening night film at the 31st Slamdance Film Festival at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, CA, as part of the 31st Slamdance Film Festival that runs Feb. 20-26; for more information, log on to https://slamdance.com.] Striking photography highlights Rosanna Xia and Daniel Straub's fascinating, revealing, educational, insightful, ire-inducing, 94-minute documentary that provides a sobering update to Rachel Carson's 1962 book Silent Spring and documents that DDT can affect human birth defects for at least 70 years and can also affect the micro communities on and under the ocean floor, the fish that eat those creatures, the seals that eat the fish (developing cancer), the small and large mammals that eat the seals, and even the condors that feed on the seal remains and makes it clear that widespread dumping of 500,000 barrels of DDT (and other toxics) off the Southern California coast since WWII occurred so extensively and with little or no monitoring or regulation that the prospects of cleanup may well be impossible, and it consists of archival photographs and film clips and commentary with principal investigator David Valentine, environmental health scientist Eunha Hoh, marine biologists Toni Sleugh and Brice Semmens, museum scientist Charlotte Seid, chemical oceanographer Lihini Aluwihare, wildlife Joe Burnett, epidemiologist Barbara Cohn, DDT study participant Akilah Shahid, microbiologist Veronika Kivenson, EPA region 9 deputy director John Lyons, Heal the Bay environmentalist Katherine Pease, and environmental scientist Mark Gold.
